Week Four
What is Multimedia?
"Multimedia is a combination of more than one media type such as text (alphabetic or numeric), symbols, images, pictures, audio, video, and animations usually with the aid of technology for the purpose of enhancing understanding or memorisation" (Abdulrahaman et al., 2020).
In research conducted by Gunawardhana and Palaniappan (2016) it is found that the use of multimedia in education can help boost creativity and reflection on class content.
Therefore, teachers should be actively researching strategies to include multimedia resources into their classes, as it allows students to gain information through multiple displays of information. Teachers should also encourage students to engage with multimedia technologies in order to show off their creativity to produce projects and videos that showcase their own ideas.
Apple Clips
Figure 1: (Apple Support, 2021)
Apple Clips is an example of a multimedia technology that can be utilised in schools in order to promote creativity and allow students to better take in content. Apple Clips could be used by both the teacher or the students in class, depending on the lesson and content being taught.
Apple Clips could be used in schools as a creative way to assess students. This could be through creating a video essay to assess a students knowledge of class materials. This could be extremely beneficial to learning, as students are able to present their argument alongside video and sound effects in order to better argue their content. This is supported by research conducted by Caratozzolo et al. (2022) highlighting that using video essays was appreciated by students in their study as it gave them freedom of choice as well as allowed them to show things that they typically couldn't in a normal essay.
Apple Clips would be a useful multimedia technology for several different subjects in school. These subjects could include, History, Geography, English. When focusing specifically on History, students could be asked to create a video of them acting out a historical event. Using Apple Clips for this task would be extremely useful, as they can take short video clips and connect them in order to create a longer video. It would also allow them to add music that is well suited to their topic, as well as cool special effects and captions.
Therefore, this would allow students to project their creativity and choice into their work and assessment tasks as there are many design features that allow students to make a unique video.

Critiques
Although Apple Clips is an extremely useful app for promoting students creativity it does still have some limitations.
For example, as this is only an app you can use on an iPhone or iPad, users without these items are unable to engage with the technology. It can also be more difficult creating longer videos on a phone or iPad, as they're smaller devices.
This app also doesn't include any form of transition effects, which may limit creativity when making longer projects, as students may find it harder to show the difference between parts of the video.

Hi Isabella,
I really enjoyed your blog post, the inclusion of YouTube videos as a source of content was really refreshing as it means I don't have to read every concept.
You mention how Apple Clips could be used for History, Geography, and English classes. I wish there was more extensive information about how it can be used in each individual lesson in more detail.
I really like how you included critiques at the end of the blog post where you discussed the negatives of the application.
Overall, this blog was really enjoyable.
Hi,
The blog is super useful! I liked that you included a YouTube clip, and then a personal video using the app it provided that addition information. It’s unfortunate that the limitations of the app is for only apple products. That would really limited accessibility in the classroom.

Hi Bella,
Great post this week. I really like how you explored the use of a technology to foster creativity in assessment tasks. Focussing on its use in assessments was a very original idea. It’s not something I’ve seen other blogs do, which really makes your post stand out!
You mention a few subjects including History that this technology could be used for. I would have loved for you to include a link/reference to the specific syllabus dot point to really strength your post and highlight where exactly it could be used in the classroom.
I also like how you’ve included some critiques to show the limitations associated with using an app compatible with Apple only. Especially considering i…
